A Very Kerri Christmas 6 - 2010

I liked last year's cover better, but what can ya do.  I'm running out of ideas ;)

  1. I Wish It Was Christmas Today - Julian Casablancas.  A great take on an SNL classic.
  2. Tiny Tree Christmas - Guster.  Target put out a free Christmas CD to download from their website of all the Christmas songs from their commercials.  This was my favorite before I even knew it was Guster.  I love that a bunch of Jewish guys make some awesome Christmas music.
  3. Shake Up Christmas - Train.  I heard this song in a radio commercial and loved it - it's a nice, upbeat Christmas song.
  4. Boots - The Killers.   Another winner for their fifth annual Christmas single.  I put this one somewhere below Don't Shoot Me Santa and somewhere above Joseph, Better You Than Me.
  5. Electronic Santa - Blazer Force
  6. Christmas Was Better In The 80s - The Futureheads.  Lot of truth to that.
  7. Wish List - Neon Trees.  Leaving aside my classic repeat final track, this is my favorite Christmas track from 2010 - an iTunes freebie "Christmas single of the week" gold mine!
  8. Everything Is One Big Christmas Tree - The Magnetic Fields
  9. It's Christmas - Coconut Records
  10. Mistletoe - Jukebox the Ghost
  11. Last Christmas - Florence + the Machine
  12. Little Drummer Boy - The Dandy Warhols
  13. Got Something For You - Best Coast, Wavves
  14. 10,000 Watts - Crystal Antlers
  15. Christmas Isn't Christmas - The Boy Least Likely To
  16. Snow Is Falling - Darker My Love
  17. Fairytale of New York - Dustin Kensrue.  The original is a classic, and Dustin definitely took some liberties with rewriting one of the verses to make it more "family friendly", but I just love this man's voice so, so, soooo much.
  18. Splitting up Christmas - Kevin Devine.  No explanation necessary.

Song of the Week - 02.08.10 - 02.13.10

Halfway Gone by Lifehouse.  I have loved Lifehouse for nearly ten years (10 years!!!  How is that possible?) now, and one would think that I'd recognize Jason Wade's voice by now.  But I heard this song about ten times playing on the radio in Subway before I finally remembered to look up who sung it . . .this is easily my favorite "album first single" from Lifehouse since "Hanging By A Moment" . . . I love singing along with it.

Song of the Week - 02.01.10 - 02.07.10

Sometime Around Midnight by The Airborne Toxic Event.  I am cheating by making this song the song of the week for the first week in February - this was the song of the YEAR for 2009.  It does not get better than this song, which seemed to have a new significance this month.

So there's a change in your emotions
All these memories come rushing like feral waves to your  mind
Of the curl of your bodies like two perfect circles entwined
And you feel hopeless and homeless and lost in the haze of the wine . . .

I don't need to even say anymore.  You can read what else I had to say about this song on my "Best of 2009 CD" post.

BRAND NEW - HOUSE OF BLUES
December 1, 2007 - Atlantic City, NY

Random stupid things I overheard myself say at the Brand New show:

"I bet that Jesse would look around here and say 'You know what I find sexy? The art."

"The best thing about marrying somebody whose last name is Lacey is that I could wear a lacy dress for the wedding. Wait, no, what? The best thing about marrying somebody whose last name is Lacey is that I would be marrying Jesse Lacey."

"I'll give you $100 if you go over to that girl and say, 'Chelsea, oh my God, is that you? Don't you remember me? I used to babysit for you, like 4 years ago! Is this your boyfriend? That's so cute!'"

"I'll give you $100 if you go over to that girl and say, 'You really shouldn't drink that beer, it's not good for the baby.'"

"Add me on Facebook!" . . . "He's actually kind of a cute for like a 20-year-old. If he's 21, it's a win!"

The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem.  I first heard this song last year, and liked it right away, but it didn't go past a couple of casual listens until this week, when I finally bought the CD with the same title.  The CD was a classic from first listen - I loved it immediately.  The lyrics are kind of heartbreaking . . . young boys . . . young girls . . . ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night . . . the song is pretty much amazing.

January 21, 2010 - Farmingdale, NY

This was actually probably the most enjoyable show I've ever attended at The Crazy Donkey - the crowd wasn't obnoxious, the venue kept the show moving, and, well, Kevin Devine performed!   So naturally that makes everything better.  My first show of 2010 was a great one.

Song of the Week - 01.17.10 - 01.24.10

Sleepyhead by Passion Pit.  I was a little late to the party with this one - I've been a fan of The Reeling for a while, but I hadn't heard Sleepyhead until my friend Pat put it on his 2009 Mix.  This song instantly puts me in a good mood.  I don't even know what the hell the singer is singing, but everything about it makes me happy.  Don't believe me?  Listen for yourself!

Song of the Week - 01.10.10 - 01.16.10

Gateway Drug by The Spill Canvas.  I've grown to believe that The Spill Canvas can do no wrong.  From their lyrics to their album titles ("No Really, I'm Fine" and "Honestly, I'm Doing OK" . . . love it!!) to their live shows, these guys have never disappointed me.  Their latest EP, "Abnormalities", is no exception.  Gateway Drug is one of only three songs on the album, but I've loved it from the minute it was first released on the Spill Canvas's MySpace page a month or so ago.  Can't wait for their next full length.

You are my gateway drug
You pull me down
You mess me up
You are my gateway drug
You give me a taste for the harder stuff
And I don't wanna stop

Maroon 5 - 02.24.08

Maroon 5 - The Apple Store, SoHo

February 24, 2008 - New York, NY

Mary and I went to a free Maroon 5 show at the Apple Store in SoHo tonight (thanks, Keely) and they played their entire "new" album and we sat in the fourth row (the entire first row was full of a group of eight-ish year-old boys and one little girl, who I hypothesized were all of Adam Levine's illegitimate children - I'm kind of a terrible person) and by the end of the show, Adam Levine's two shirts were soaked with sweat (he did not cave in to the incessant "TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT!" screams, despite his repeated complaints of how hot it was - he was literally the hottest person in the room, haha) and we were able to see his nipples the whole show and make out what looked like a teddy bear tattoo on his right shoulder. He was really funny and I loved when he would try to explain what the songs were about or when they were written before he sang them. He seemed like a genuinely cool person and not at all like a total ass, like I'd expect him to be. I like when bands seem genuine in their gratefulness for their fans, as opposed to coming across as "we're doing you a favor by letting you listen to our music."

But anyway. The highlight was when I took my eyes off the stage for about 5 seconds in between songs and suddenly I felt something hit me in my lap and fall on the floor at my feet - their guitarist, Jimmy Valentine (the second coolest J. Valentine "musician"), had flicked a pick at me. I've been going to concerts for 12 years and I've never gotten a pick, a drumstick, or even a setlist - it was pretty exciting. It says "Maroon 5" on one side and "Jimmy V." with a heart on the other side - I love it.

The only downside is that now I feel a little guilty for referring to Jimmy V as "The Caveman" since Mary and I saw them at MSG in October.

But not too guilty.  Note to Jimmy: get a haircut.

Setlist:
  1. If I Never See Your Face Again
  2. Makes Me Wonder
  3. Little of Your Time
  4. Wake Up Call
  5. Won't Go Home Without You
  6. Nothing Lasts Forever
  7. Can't Stop
  8. Goodnight Goodnight
  9. Not Falling Apart

  11. Better That We Break

Brighter Discontent by The SubmarinesTowards the end of the 4th Season Finale of Nip/Tuck, this song is used in a montage, with each of the main characters lip syncing along in their respective locations . . . it was pretty neat. I downloaded the song that same day and it's been on repeat for most of this week - I absolutely love it.
