A Very Kerri Christmas 5 - 2009

  1. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Dustin Kensrue.  I love this guy's voice.  I love that this guy released an entire album of Christmas songs.  I hate that I had to narrow it down to one.
  2. Last Christmas - Glee cast.  They should release a Christmas album.  But since they haven't, I'll settle for them singing my second favorite Christmas song.
  3. Things We Don't Need Anymore - Jenny Owens Young
  4. Snake Oil Tanker (Xmas) - Alkaline Trio
  5. ex miss - A New Found Glory.  The first line of this song pretty much sums it all up: "Everything that could have went wrong, went wrong this year."
  6. My Christmas List - Simple Plan
  7. A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss) - Glasvegas
  8. Happy Birthday Guadalupe! - The Killers
  9. Rudolph the Red Neck Reindeer - Rocket Park.  Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to the tune of Freebird.  AWESOME.
  10. Cold White Christmas - Casiotone for the PainfullyAlone
  11. O Come All Ye Faithful - Weezer
  12. We Three Kings - Fuel
  13. Christmases When You Were Mine - Taylor Swift

  16. The First Song - Band of Horses
  17. Fairytale of New York - Stars
  18. All I Want for Christmas - The Genuine Fakes
  19. Splitting Up Christmas - Kevin Devine.  Again, this song will be on every Christmas CD I ever make.  Best Kevin Devine song ever.  Best Christmas song ever.  Even at my worst, thing song reminds me that my friends and my family all are my backbone.  For a free download, check this out!

The Airborne Toxic Event was absolutely incredible. They are hands down the best band of 2009 - best lyrics, best song, best band period. As soon as the opening instrumental of "Sometime After Midnight" begun, I felt my throat closing up. The tears were rolling down my face by the end of the first verse. That song is one of the absolute most amazing songs I've ever heard. I love it so much.

The Get Up Kids at Irving Plaza - 10.31.09

THE GET UP KIDS - IRVING PLAZA
October 31, 2009 - New York, NY
With: Kevin Devine and The Life and Times

The show kicked off pretty much at 9 on the dot, a rarity for Irving Plaza to actually be punctual - the opening band was called "The Life and Times" and they were rocking ZZ Top costumes and calling themselves "ZZ Times" - I wasn't overly impressed by them, but as far as opening bands go, they weren't awful.

Kevin Devine was next - his band dressed up as mummies and he had changed from when I'd seen him earlier into a dress with a short blond wig, sparkly flat shoes, and several long necklaces. "I got confused, I thought they said we were going as MOMMIES," he said. 45 minutes went by way too quickly, but he NEVER disappoints me, and every time I see him, I know it's going to be amazing.

Kevin Devine Setlist

  1. No Time Flat
  2. Longer That I'm Out Here
  3. Yr Husband
  4. Hand of God
  5. Cotton Crush
  6. Carnival
  7. Another Bag of Bones
  8. Brother's Blood

Irving Plaza always plays weird, trippy movies with no sound in between their sets . . . this time it was "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" and "The Wizard of Oz", which I thought was just random happenstance until the lights dimmed, the screen lifted, and "We're Off To See The Wizard" started playing throughout the venue . . . the Get Up Kids took the stage dressed up as the characters from the Wizard of Oz (the poor guy who played "Dorothy" looked so innocent that it was actually more adorable than it was disturbing).

Guster at Higher Ground - 11.07.09

GUSTER - HIGHER GROUND
November 7, 2009 - Burlington, VT

My first online diary entry I ever wrote, on April 7, 2000, mentioned that I had purchased Guster's "Lost and Gone Forever" album the day before. I had known of Guster before then - I'd heard them when I went to Woodstock '99 and then saw them again in September at a radio station concert in Connecticut. But I didn't really know them until Zach sent me a few mp3s. I remember he sent me "So Long", "Happier", and "Rocketship" and I was in love and I bought "Lost and Gone Forever" almost immediately afterwards. My first diary title was "Two Points for Honesty", which to this day remains my favorite Guster song, and I've seen them a bunch since, and I've spoken to Adam Gardener on the phone and I've seen their bare asses and Zach and I have a bet going that if I'm not married within three years from Anna and Alan's wedding (which was in June 2008 . . . I'm so going to win) he's going to fly me anywhere in the world I want to see them . . . GOD I love Guster. So severely.

I first learned about this while I was in London, and tickets sold out before I could get them for the New York show, but Liz agreed to go with me up to Vermont, and to Vermont we went.

The show was pretty friggin awesome. What can I say. It was a LOT of driving . . . I left my house at 9:40 yesterday and we didn't get up to Burlington until after 6 and then today, I didn't get home until 8:30, and we barely did ANYTHING other than go to the concert, but it was so worth it.

The first set was a bunch of random stuff . . . awesome. Setlist:

First Set
  1. The Captain
  2. Backyard
  3. Satellite
  4. Red Oyster Cult
  5. Don't Fear the Reaper
  6. [New Song]
  7. Demons
  8. Keep It Together
  9. [New Song]
  10. Rocketship
  11. Manifest Destiny
  12. The Beginning of the End
  13. Airport Song

Second Set - Lost and Gone Forever

  1. What You Wish For
  2. Barrel of a Gun
  3. Either Way
  4. Fa Fa
  5. I Spy
  6. Center of Attention
  7. All The Way Up To Heaven
  8. Happier
  9. So Long
  10. Two Points for Honesty
  11. Rainy Day
All of my favorites come from "Lost and Gone Forever" . . . I still maintain that "Happier"/"So Long"/"Two Points for Honesty" may be one of the best 1-2-3 punches of any album ever. So much brilliance in so few songs. I didn't realize until Ryan said it that "Barrel of a Gun" is about masturbation. But then he sang another little song along with it "The gun is a penis . . . the penis is a gun. The bullets are my semen, who will be the special one . . . that I will impregnate?" He explained "The tour's almost over, we're getting a little punchy. . . " Haha. I love them.

Encore
  1. Hang On
  2. Come Downstairs and Say Hello
  3. Jesus on the Radio (acoustic)

For "Jesus on the Radio", they didn't just do it "acoustic", they literally unplugged all the guitars, Brian used a tambourine instead of drums, no microphones . . . you could hear a pin drop in the crowd. It was awesome. Just . . . awesome.

    18. Seventy Times 7

Brand New. Oh, Brand New. I love, love, love them, so much, and I was so proud of them. They were amazing and I was so happy for them . . . there were a couple of moments when I saw Jesse looking around the Coliseum, realizing that there were 10,000+ people there and just taking it all in . . . they kept hailing the show as the "homecoming" show for them, and their set was PERFECT . . . they ended with "Play Crack the Sky" (my all time favorite) followed by "Seventy Times 7" (which has hit particularly close to home lately) and it was awesome. There is nothing like 10,000+ people singing "I HOPE YOU CHOKE AND DIE" at the top of their lungs.  Best band ever.

I thought I might start crying when Thrice came on . . . I'd seen them twice before (I told Liz and my friend Mike from high school who we met up with there "I've seen Thrice twice . . . after tonight, I'll have seen Thrice thrice!") but before I knew any of their music . . . Dustin Kensrue has a beautiful voice, and I couldn't help but be excited to see them, especially when they played "The Artist in the Ambulance", my favorite song of theirs.

    3. Another Bag of Bones
    4. Cotton Crush
    5. Brother’s Blood

My love for Kevin Devine has only strengthened with time . . . seven years and thirteen shows later, Kevin Devine has gone from this amazing singer to this amazing singer who is also my hero who is also . . . um, AMAZING. God, I don't know how else to describe him. Nothing gets me more excited than when I see him and he sees me and his eyes light up in recognition . . . we've only met a few times, and he has no idea what my name is, but when he took the stage tonight to open up for Brand New at Nassau Coliseum, I felt such a surge of pride for him. The first time I saw him was at the Mercury Lounge with Shannon, in June 2003, when we were the only two people in the venue who weren't his friends or family. Tonight he sang to hundreds, maybe even thousands of people, and I was so proud of him. I congratulated him when I saw him after the show and he just looked so overwhelmed and grateful, I just adore him. He's just amazing.
